Fiber vs. CO2 Laser Cutting — When to Use Each

The laser industry is migrating from CO2 to fiber, but CO2 still has important advantages in specific applications.

Speed on Thin Metal

Fiber laser is 3–5x faster than CO2 on material under 0.250". On 20 ga mild steel, a 10kW fiber laser cuts at 1,500+ ipm vs. 300 ipm for a 6kW CO2. This speed advantage is the primary driver of the fiber migration. For high-volume thin sheet metal work, fiber's economics are overwhelming.

Thick Metal Quality

Above 0.750"–1.000", CO2 laser produces better edge quality than fiber. The longer wavelength (10.6μm vs 1.07μm) creates a wider, more stable cut front in thick material. Fiber laser edges on 1"+ steel show more striation and roughness. For thick plate work where edge quality matters (no grinding before welding), CO2 still has an edge. This gap is closing with higher-power fiber systems (15–30kW).

Reflective Materials

Fiber laser cuts copper, brass, and bronze. CO2 laser cannot — the 10.6μm wavelength reflects off these materials and can damage the optics. This alone has driven many shops to fiber. If your work includes copper bus bars, brass fittings, or bronze components, you need a fiber laser shop.

Non-Metal Cutting

CO2 excels at cutting non-metals: acrylic (crystal-clear flame-polished edges), wood, MDF, fabric, leather, paper, and rubber. Fiber laser cannot cut most non-metals effectively — the wavelength doesn't couple with organic materials. Signage shops, textile cutters, and acrylic fabricators stay on CO2.

Operating Cost

Fiber laser operating cost: $15–$25/hour (electricity + gas). CO2 laser operating cost: $30–$60/hour (electricity + gas + resonator maintenance + mirrors + optics). Fiber's solid-state resonator has no consumable optics and minimal maintenance. Over a machine's life, fiber saves $100K–$200K in operating costs vs. equivalent CO2.

Decision Matrix

Thin metal (< 0.375") high volume → Fiber. Thick metal (> 1") quality-critical → CO2. Copper/brass/bronze → Fiber. Acrylic/wood/non-metals → CO2. New equipment purchase → Fiber (unless non-metal focused). Mixed metal shop → Fiber. Mixed metal + non-metal shop → One of each.
